Works on forest inventory will begin in Lagodekhi
In Lagodekhi, on the territory of the forest fund, works on forest inventory will begin. Work will take place on an area of 21,116 hectares, on the basis of which a 10-year forest management plan will be drawn up. The last forest inventory in Lagodekhi was conducted in 1993.
Before the start of field works, in connection with the planned activities, in order to inform the public and maximize the participation of different parties in the next stage, the Head of the National Forestry Agency Archil Nikoleishvili met with representatives of local government, indigenous people and other interested parties.
Due to the shortage of qualified personnel required to conduct a forest inventory in the country, the National Forestry Agency has prepared a special three-month theoretical and practical course for retraining of foresters-taxators. Agency's foresters specialists retrained 15 young foresters, which will be employed in forest inventory works. The process is supported by the UN Development Program.
Forest inventory is a prerequisite for sustainable forest development, which is used to plan all types of forest management activities and to quantify and assess forests. It has a 10-year audit period. The National Forestry Agency has been able to restore the process since 2013. To date, information on the quantitative and qualitative indicators of forests has been updated on an area of 232,316 hectares in the territory managed by the agency, and 10-year forest management plans have been drawn up.
