The Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia is starting reforestation activities in Borjomi gorge, village of Daba damaged by fire in 2008 and 2017. 

In the first phase (2018-2019), 250 ha area will be rehabilitated. The planting and sowing activities will start from September, 2018. The forest will be restored to 144 ha area, up to 400 000 seeds will be planted.

In May, the following works were carried out: the territories were cleaned up, the integrity of the perimeter fence restored, anti-erosion and, in certain places, soil restoration works, as well as restoration and cleaning of the fire trails implemented.

Involvement of private sector and civil society in the process of restoration of damaged forest is crucial.

TBC Bank was one of the first companies to initiate the involvement in reforestation activities of burnt forest stands.

Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture, TBC Bank, National Forestry Agency and National Nursery according to which TBC Bank will completely restore 10 hectares of forests in Borjomi damaged by forest fire in 2017. By the end of 2018, TBC Bank will have a total of 17 500 Caucasian pines, seedlings from National nursery, will be planted in the area. The planting activities will be supervised by forest specialists.

The memorandum was signed by the Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Yuri Nozadze, deputy director general of TBC Bank Nikoloz Kurdiani and heads of National Forestry Agency and National Nursery.

The main objective of the forest restoration project is to restore the original forest ecosystem in the valley, for which only local, standard seedling is used. The seedlings of the deciduous and coniferous forest producers are brought to the National Forest Agency's nurseries that are arranged in the same zone. Container nursery is used in the national construction for forest restoration.

The main objective of the forest restoration project is the restoration of the primary forest ecosystem in the gorge, for the achievement of which only local standard seedlings will be used. Seedlings of deciduous and coniferous forests are grown in nurseries of the National Forest Agency, which are located in the same zone. For the restoration of the forest, seedlings in containers grown at National nursery are used as well.
