In the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, in the Bakuriani forest area, sanitary cutting and removal of dry and diseased trees from the area affected by the pest are underway.

The National Forestry Agency in the framework of the pest bark beetle combat measures has deployed up to 3,000 pheromone insect traps in the spring and autumn of 2022 in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region (Borjomi, Bakuriani, Akhaltsikhe, Adigeni, Aspindza).

"Daba Bakuriani is a resort area, and measures to combat the pest are important both for maintaining the ecological condition and improving the tourism potential of the region. Based on the results of the monitoring, the Forestry Agency will carry out complex measures of forest maintenance and restoration in the coming years as well. It should be noted that based on the results of the monitoring of 2021, the number of harmful insects and the intensity of the withering of spruce trees have been drastically reduced," said Giorgi Chachiashvili, Acting Head of the National Forestry Agency.

The bark beetle has spread in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region since the 50s of the last century and caused great damage to spruce groves. An increase in withering intensity has been observed since 2011. Since 2013, the National Forestry Agency has been carrying out combat measures on an area of 26,000 ha.
