Forest Restoration Project in Borjomi Municipality
Head of the National Forestry Agency, Besik Amiranashvili, visited the Borjomi Municipality near the village of Daba to inspect the restoration process of the fire-damaged forest. The completed works and the current state of the restored forest were assessed on-site.
In 2008, during the August War, a forest fire in the Borjomi valley covered an area of 950.9 hectares, including 250 hectares near the village of Daba that were completely destroyed. Forest restoration efforts on this territory began in 2013, however, a repeat fire in 2017 damaged the already restored areas.
The National Forestry Agency resumed restoration activities in 2017, and comprehensive works were carried out on a total of 636 hectares. Within the framework of the forest restoration project, 345,530 seedlings of various species were planted on 144 hectares, while measures to support natural regeneration were implemented on 492 hectares.
“One of the primary goals of the forestry reform is to improve forest protection and land-use practices. It is significant that the scale of restoration activities for degraded forests increases annually. The Forestry Agency has updated its long-term forest restoration and cultivation plan, according to which, between 2025 and 2036, restoration measures will be implemented across a total area of up to 51,000 hectares,” stated Besik Amiranashvili.
Currently, periodic monitoring of the fire-damaged forest areas is ongoing. According to expert assessments, the condition of the restored areas is positive and does not require further intensive intervention.
Forest care and restoration remain a top priority for the National Forestry Agency, and work in this direction continues actively throughout the country
