Illegal logging and transportation of timber in Chiatura
Employees of the Imereti Forestry Service have uncovered illegal logging and transportation of timber in the state forest in Chiatura.
The offender illegally obtained up to 3 cubic meters of chestnut timber, which is protected by the Red List, and transported it by a vehicle without a state license plate.
Since the case contains elements of a criminal offense, the materials have been forwarded to the relevant investigative agency for further response. The vehicle was sealed, and the illegally harvested timber was transferred to the Chiatura business yard for further disposal.
"To prevent, detect, and suppress illegal use of natural resources, forestry service employees carry out systematic patrols, while at the same time, continuous monitoring is carried out using modern technologies - video traps and drones. Strict sanctions defined by legislation are imposed for any violation of the law. Combating illegal logging is one of the agency's main tasks. All resources are mobilized to be able to minimize the facts of violation of the law," said Kakha Tsertsvadze, Head of the National Forestry Agency.
