Illegal Logging Detected in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti
Employees of the Internal Audit and Forest Use Departments of the LEPL National Forestry Agency have uncovered an incident of illegal logging involving up to 50 cubic meters of beech firewood in the state forest territory of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region. The estimated environmental damage amounts to 7,508.8 GEL.
Administrative offense protocols have been drawn up against nine individuals, and the case materials have been forwarded to the Ambrolauri District Court for further legal action.
“The relevant structural units of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture - the National Forestry Agency and the Department of Environmental Supervision - carry out 24/7 monitoring to detect and prevent violations. Our primary challenge is the implementation of sustainable forest management principles and the fight against illegal forest use. Work in this direction is actively ongoing,” said Kakha Tsertsvadze, Head of the National Forestry Agency.
